Roy,

As I said in the other post....perhaps he was also known as Charles (as he seems to be listed in the 1901 census). Unfortunately there does not seem to be any record of a man named Gowland listed as receiving an award in the London Gazette. The LF service fits with the photo of your man though.

As far as battalion goes....the four digit LF number will not assist much I am afraid. The New Army battalions (9th to 23rd) were issued their own group of numbers collectively (separately from the remainder of the regiment). It appears the New Army man issued with the number 6156 was Pte James Barlow of the 10th Battalion, he was KIA. This probably means (although not certainly) that your man served with one of the regular battalions (1st or 2nd) or one of the TF battalions (5th to 8th including second and third line) as an earlier enlistment before they changed to six digit numbers.

This said the Medal Index Cards list only three LF men with the number 6156. These are Gowland, Barlow and a David Whittaker. A lot of men with 6*** numbers appear to have served with the 1st, 2nd, 1/6th and 1/8th Battalions.

A look at the Medal Rolls (you can obtain the reference from his Medal Index Card) may give an indication of his LF Battalion.

I don't know much about the RE numbering system but looking at Soldiers Died all men between 361000 and 361310 who died - only three of them 361050, 361208, 361310 - all served with 52nd Divisional Signals Company, Royal Engineers.

Rgds

The Gazette website seems to "having one" at the moment.

I can find things when I search for "H. Gowland" (although those refer to a Lt.) but not for Gowland on its own. Bizarre...

They may have had a problem with their database, since some of the names I could find earlier weren't coming up.
