Remembered Today:

Lt Cecil Reginald Crymble.

This officer was killed by a snipers bullet on Nov 20th 1914.

I have his info from De Ruvigny and Bond of Sacrifice which seem to show a Belfast man with connections to London.

Have just found him remembered on my local memorial in Middlesbrough here in the north east.

Can't find what links him to this area so if anyone has anything further on him I would be most grateful.

Bob.

Hi Bob,

I have a little bit about this man but none of it seems to shed any light on his English connections. A history of Queen's University Belfast says: 'Crymble graduated BA in 1906 and BSc in 1908 and achieved a DSc in 1913, for which he was awarded special distinction and a gold medal.' I have extracts from some of his letters home in a contemporary magazine - I can post scans of these (about 4 A5 pages worth) if you would be interested.

Swizz,

Thanks for your reply.

Got the info I need on his background, it's the Middlesbrough Memorial that's the puzzle for me.

Bob,

I should be in Belfast tomorrow at the Newspaper Library and will look up Crymble's death in case there is any clue as to the Middlesborough connection.

Hi Bob,

I was in the Belfast Newspaper library today and unfortunately came up more or less blank. Although I found a reference to Crymble's death - see below - I couldn't see any indication of connections to anywhere in England. I scanned through the Belfast Telegraph until the end of 1914 but couldn't see anything further than this paragraph. I hope it's of some interest anyway.

Swizz,

Many thanks for your efforts on this.

If I do discover the N/E England connection will be sure to let you know.

Gut feeling is that he could have worked in the fledgling chemical industry in this area for a time and was included on Middlesbrough memorial by work colleagues which was not uncommon.

Will keep you posted if anything turns up.

Bob.

Bob - I know this is a very old thread, but you may be interested to know that Lt Crymble is mentioned on the Royal Belfast Academical Institution memorial - I've posted a photo of it at this thread -

Bob

Not much help, I'm afraid, just a little more info.
