museumtom Posted 4 June , 2005 Share Posted 4 June , 2005 This is the m1871 german bayonet, Also made in walking out(private purchase) which was different in that it did not have a fuller(Blood groove for the 'Rambo' types), was etched on the blade and had a non functioning release button and spring. regards. ian turner Posted 4 June , 2005 Share Posted 4 June , 2005 Tony, For what it may be worth, Solingen is near Cologne (my grandfather's division was stationed there in 1918/1919). Ian
gew98 Posted 4 June , 2005 Share Posted 4 June , 2005 Tony, For what it may be worth, Solingen is near Cologne (my grandfather's division was stationed there in 1918/1919). Ian <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes , you do have a Sg71 ( model 1871 ) .This bayonet originally was manufactured for the IG& G71 rifles. It was also retained for use with the later 71/84 and gew88 rifles and soldiered on through to the end of WW1 in troops armed with the Gew88 and those in germany guarding POW's with G71 and 71/84 rifles , and simular guard type functions. Your bayonet is marked tot he 20th Reserve Infantry Regiment , 10th company , weapon number # 28. On the top spline of the blade should be a crown proof with a two digit number - the date of acceptance ( manufacture )by the imperial german government. Your blade ha had the tip knocked off - sad, but what can you do. The frog is a typical Sg98/05 bayonet frog. On the US market your bayonet would be in the $150 -maybe $200 range in value. The nipped tip does hurt it a tad. If the scabbard has a regimental and it matches the one on the bayonet's crossguard that is a major plus.
