Chatham and Plymouth Memorials

Does anyone know if these Memorials include the ship's names that the listed dead were serving on? If they are shown, is it possible to obtain a listing of them?

Best wishes

Certainly not at Chatham, David. The CWGC site may give details if you have a particular name you are interested in, but that's about it.

The memorial at Liverpool Pier Head is listed by ship on which the men served. I have pictures of all of these and can send them on to you if they would be of any use.

The memorials are not 'ship specific' and some of the same ships' crew appear on different memorials. The names appear on the memorial for the casualty's manning port.

Hence, the crew of many lost ships appear spread over the three UK WW1 naval memorials - Portsmouth, Plymouth and Chatham - along with those who died on land.

Gentlemen,

My apologies for not thanking you for your useful replies more quickly but I had missed my post having risen to the top again.

Stephen, I most certainly will take up your offer. Will send my e address.

Terry, what I am really interested in is the names of the ships involved for the Chatham and Plymouth Memorials, so that I can check them off against my database in order to see if there any sunken ships previously unkown to me

Best wishes

David

Still not quite clear what you are checking as the crew of a particular ship can appear spread over all three memorials - or are you just after the names of all sunken ships appearing on Chatham and Plymouth (accepting that some of their crew will be on Portsmouth!).

Terry, what I am looking for is exactly as the extract from your post.

From your earlier post I now know that the ships are not actually listed on the Memorials but wonder if lists are available.

I have the names of the relevant ships for the Portsmouth Memorial but additional ones may be involved with Chatham and Plymouth.

I know it may sound sacriligeous but in this context I am not interested in the names of those who died in the ships, only in the ships names.

Best wishes

The best way to find these is to go through the CWGC entries for all names on those memorials and extract the ships' names.

If you email me with your email address I can send you these lists. That will be quicker than checking every name on the CWGC internet site! With a couple of hours work you will have your list of ships :D
