Remembered Today:

Killed soldiers next of kin/birthdate

Hi Pals,

Am investigating a possible relative of ours. I want to establish his next if kin, and get a copy of his birth certificate. Both of these items may confirm he is def a relative. Problem is CWGC does not give next of kin and I dont have his birthdate to order a birth certificate.

What I do have is the following.

Loius Hinchliffe

1st/5th Battn West Yorkshire (Princ of Wales Own) regiment.

KIA 09 October 1917

Service number 41529.

Buried at DOCHY FARMNEW BRITISH CEMENTARY

Given his service record may be destroyed, are there any other sources out there which could give me his next of kin, and birth date. Any pointers would be appreciated.

thanks in advance Aaron.

Would a 1901 Census search assist you at all? I am guessing that there are typos in the name you have outlined and working on the assumption that the name might be Louis Hinchcliffe, ran a search.

There's one result: Louis Hinchcliffe, aged 5, born in London, living in the civil parish of St Clement Danes (London).

Hi Paul,

Have checked the spelling. CWGC has him Hinchliffe without the C. Although your right with genealogy you must always take mis spelt names into consideration. Can you advise me how you searched on the 1901 census. Is it a webste ??? maybe I could conduct my own searches. It looks like he may be our man. there couldnt be that many Loius Hinchliffes the right age around??

thanks Aaron.

Hello Aaaron

Yes there's a website. Here's the link:

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I got that information on the free search option but had I paid, there would have been more information available such as the precise address and details of other people living at that address.

Actually, I just ran a search on Louis Hinchliffe and there are three (two from Yorks, so that looks more hopeful).

Good luck

Paul

I'm impressed with the information you've turned up on the registration dates of the births. Presuming you don't have a personal hoard of Hinchliffe births, deaths and marriages ledgers, where did you go to access that information so quickly?

I have a subscription to a Family History site. However, there is a free site here (they even use the same database) :

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

It's a bit slower than the pay-site but you get the same info, generally. The entries cut off around 1910, unfortunately.

Remember that not all Birth, marriages and deaths are listed here - yet. So this may not be the person you are looking for, although that it is likely, cant be that many Louis Hinchliffes. If you order the cert from Southport it will cost you £8.50 on the phone or £7.00 online. Should you find that it isnt your man you can check the BMD registers online at www.1837online.com. If I were you I would start with the death cert and get his correct age from there. I think that war deaths are listed on the above site under something like deaths abroad. At least you know you will have the correct death cert and be able to work your way back from there. Never assume just because it is the same name.

You can also specify certain criteria for the Birth and Marriage Certificate, too. If they don't match you only pay part of the fee, I believe. Not ordered one yet, myself, so not 100% on that one, but will have too soon!
