Guest Ian Topham Posted 4 July , 2003 Share Posted 4 July , 2003 Medals were awarded to individuals by other nations, France, Belgium, Italy etc. If a person was serving within a British unit or formation, serving in a British section of the front, who decided who was to be awarded a medal of another allied nation, was it a lottery? Many thanks
robwilliams Posted 6 July , 2003 Share Posted 6 July , 2003 Very often a foreign award was issued to someone who probably had not done quite enough to obtain a British award. I would imagine these came down the chain of command and were suggested by Division/Brigade. Rob
Ken Lees Posted 9 July , 2003 Share Posted 9 July , 2003 In some cases, foreign awards were given to men who had already received British awards. I know of a case where a man had been awarded the MM & DCM and was then awarded the Russian Cross of St George. I haven't seen any hard and fast rules about this issue.
