John_Hartley Posted 8 October , 2005 Share Posted 8 October , 2005 Delphi To the best of my knowledge , there are only likely to be two copies of the diary publically available. The first is at the National Archives at Kew. They will photocpy the diary for you -check out their website for how to go about it. As an idea of cost the copy I have of 17/Manchester cost me a couple of hundred quid about three years ago. The other copy is at the Regimental Museum at Preston. Don't know if they will copy for you, but like the National Archives, you can make an appointment to go and read it, take notes, etc. You are unlikely to find your relative mentioned by name, though. I know he was in Egypt as I have a photo. I also know he was later in France. (Gallipoli inbetween I think) what diary/s do I need to buy to cover this regiment? I have downloaded the Long Trail stuff, but being in Australia is restrictive. I am hoping to go to England next year and I will go to Kew and Preston if I can. Thanks in advnce for any help Wendy from Aussie
wrdimitroff Posted 22 December , 2006 Share Posted 22 December , 2006 Thanks for the tip (sorry I've lost your name) I think he was in the 4th Bn. of East Lancs but I am not sure. Is there any way I can confirm this. I want to have as much info as I can before I visit Kew. I have his medal information. I know his Private no was 1664 and 200258. I am not sure when he left the army. I'll keep trying to dig more info Regards Wendy
John_Hartley Posted 22 December , 2006 Share Posted 22 December , 2006 Wendy His later (post early 1917) service number - 200528 - is certainly one assocated with the 4th Battalion. If you have have downloaded his medal index card it should give you a date when he first went overseas. This might give a clue as to whether he was always in the 4th Battalion and transferred later. If I had to guess, I say he was always in it. The other number is early so I'd suggest you would probbaly need to look at the whole diary. The National Archives will give you a quotation to photocopy it for you. John
wrdimitroff Posted 24 December , 2006 Share Posted 24 December , 2006 Hi John His theatre of war first served in was 2B and date of entry was 9/5/1915. I believe this is Gallipolli. Does this confirm anything? Regards Wendy
