Cheers Mick I appreciate your help.

I sat down last night and tried to piece it all together from the Medal Rolls and the 2 sets of Army records (Militia Attestation and when he joined fully)

This is what I was left with.

Some may be incorrect and some is def missing as I did not understand what it meant or unable to read many bits.

Apoligies if its a bit long winded. <_<

It then says on M form that he now lives in St Peters Canterbury. (02 May 1899)

Where did he live when he came home?

Blimey. You'll have to give me a little while on this one. I'm away for a week from tomorrow. Give me a nudge in a couple of weeks if I haven't replied.

I will try an upload a diary not where I believe my Grandfather was wounded resulting in an amputated Leg and his discharge from the army

Just another quick one for Mick or anyone.

It looks like William was living in Chatham the year before he joined the Militia/Buffs.

It says on his Attestation papers that he is presently living in the parish of St Peters in Canterbury and for the last 12 months lived in Chatham (I think).

Does anyone know if in 1899 he would have had to travel to Canterbury to join the Buffs or could he not have done it in Chatham?

Could the fact he had just joined the Buffs have lead to the answer that his present address was maybe the Depot/Barracks? (i.e St Peters Canterbury)

The reason I am asking is that I want to establish if he went to Canterbury and decided to join up or if he purposly went to Canterbury just to join up!

Another strange thing is why would an Englishmen have a Tatoo of a Higlander on his arm :)

The other one had the "Bust" of a Indian Woman on LOL (I assume north american Indian)

Anyway...the tatoo question is not so important :D

Hello Mick

Just giving you a nudge re above... :D

Again no rush just when u get a mo...

I would be interested in anything you can provide on above..

But my main interest are the UK parts...not sure what you have but if I know where he was in the UK that would help.

As I mentioned before...Am having great difficulty pinpointing him through Civil sources at the moment until he finaly arrives at 3 Pasco Rd Hither Green in 1919, so any additional information may help.

Many thanks

Paul

It looks like you've got most of his career worked out. I'm not sure where his initial training would have been. The only thing I can add is that when he was with the 1st/2nd Battalion at home in 1904 - 05 they were in Dover. On 9/12/04 the 1st Battalion returned from Aden and were given leave until March 1905.

Your man must have been transferred to bolster the 2nd Battalion who moved out of the Citadel in Dover to Bulford in March 1905 to make way for the 1st Battalion. The 2nd Bn sailed for its 3rd turn in South Africa in the ship Dilwara on 2/6/05

In 1906 they were in Harrismith where he must have been sent home for his service in the reserve. As a reserve he would not have been 'in the army' as such and would have lived at home with a civilian job.
