Steven Broomfield Posted 24 May , 2005 Share Posted 24 May , 2005 Just found this on the back of a card. How frustrating not to know who it was from and who it was sent to. Regards Steve. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you really wanted to, I bet you could. You have the date of his birthday, and that gives an approximate date of the award. Is it possible to find all MCs gazetted in (say) March 1919, then cross-reference with the officers service rolls at Kew? How many might you be looking at by that stage - dozens, rather than hundreds. Go on, man....you can do it if you really want!
Boreenatra Posted 24 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 24 May , 2005 Yep I could. Thanks for your confidence in my ability. I shall give your suggestion such thought as it deserves. Yours faithfully Steve. (I bet there is someone on this forum who could have it done in 24 hrs.)

Send me a PM with contact details - I'm game to give some assistance....what a lovely thread we might start if we succeed!
John_Hartley Posted 25 May , 2005 Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Does whatever is on the other side of the card give us a clue? And - interesting the card wasnt posted. Handed to the chap? Never sent for some reason? I love a mystery John
Boreenatra Posted 25 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2005 John. The "A" side gives no clue as it's a greetings card which were prevelant at that time, as there really wasn't birthday cards as we know them today.Perhaps like the Unknown Soldier it probably will remain a mystery. For me, it represents an award for bravery (one would assume) so perhaps thats enough. Its still tantalising that we don't know though!!! If you can deduce anything from the other side, here it is. Regards Steve.
joseph Posted 25 May , 2005 Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Steve, The Army lists contain DOB then maybe MIC or Gazette for the award. But will there be more than ONE??. Charles
Boreenatra Posted 25 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Hi Charles. You can bet there's probably dozens. As he's "mine" I shall claim him and let him be. However I know you lot out there......Regards Steve.
John_Hartley Posted 25 May , 2005 Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Steve I reckon you can do this. I can't deduce anything from the "A" side. But seeing as it wasnt posted, then it's reasonable to assume that the date is birthday rather than date card written (which was crossingd my mind). So, presumably handed to him "on the day". Close relatives? Colleagues? Certainly people who had no earlier opportunity to congratulate him on the MC - therefore very recent gazetting. Sue Light Posted 25 May , 2005 Share Posted 25 May , 2005 That mountain scene + cattle surely can't be anything other than Scottish? Or do they have mountains and cattle the other side of the Irish Sea? But not sent from England. Sue
Boreenatra Posted 25 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 25 May , 2005 Dear All. Cattle scenes and mountains were very much the norm in the golden age along with plants, flowers, countryside etc. From my experience of PC collecting I would say it's probably a friends / colleagues card. Family probably would have written a letter to express that sort of congratulations, i.e. a more formal sort of thing. Regards Steve.
