This is great. My relly, 223171 AB Alfred Tappenden served on Undaunted from date of commisson until 23/01/1917 when he was killed whilst helping to remove an unexploded shell from one of the guns.

Hello

This is the UNDAUNTED's Roll of Honour

I would presume the three men lost on 24 Mar 1915 were killed in the collision with destroyer LANDRAIL which is shown merely as April 1915. It is apparently just a coincidence that this date coincides with the CLEOPATRA/UNDAUNTED collision in 1916. The three killed are in CWG on that date in 1915.

I would be interested to know if anyone can shed any light on the accident that killed the two men in January 1917.

Also, it is interesting to note that her commanding officer died of the influenza pandemic in 1918 showing no one was immune.

The 4 vessels sunk by Undaunted on 17 October 14 were:

T115, T117, T118 and T119. They were designated 'T' class in 1914 prior to which they had been 'S' class. All four were built in 1902.

All I have on accident is a rather bad scan of the relevant pages from the ships log, which don't give that much detail.

Hello Alan

Many thanks for the scan, but it came out difficult to read. I can pick out words here and there. Would you please be able to render me a translation from your copy?

Hello

The copies are better, but now it is appears that they are listing a third man killed in the explosion in January 1917.

Does anyone with pre cataract eyes have the ability to read the name of the man killed that I did not list.

Also, it appears among the severely wounded was a LT Andrew Stafford (Stratford, et al), but no such name appears in the NAVY LIST.

Many thanks

Alan,

If you are interested you can find your relative's Service Records at the PRO under ADM 188/393. In addition his SR also reveals that he enlisted in 1902.

Cheers,

Mark

Hello

I had a go at the scans with my son and he came up the following:

(2nd sentence) P.O. Charles Stretch, **, blown overboard - A.B. Alfred Tappenden, 29. Seriously injured Lieut. Andrew Stafford, RN, A.B.s Charles *** and Andrew Baker.

notes: Stretch's complete name was Herbert Charles Stretch. The ** would be his age, following the rationale that Tappenden's name was followed by his age, known. What I originally took as a third name was the notation "blown overboard" as Stretch is on the Chatham Memorial and Tappenden was buried ashore.

Still no joy on the Lieutenant.

Can anyone else lend a bit more to the scan?

Managed to get copy of service record from the same source as the pages from the ships log, although at least the service record is legible.

Hi,

Stumbled across this thread whilst researching my relative, Herbert Charles Stretch. We knew he was killed aboard a ship during WW1, but didn't know the specific details, so thanks for the above information. Is there likely to be original documents, as in the case of Alfred Tappenden and could someone point me in the right direction.

Regards

Dave Price

My Grandfather served on HMS Undaunted and as a little girl I recall him telling me that during the war he had been injured when one of their guns backfired and two of his colleagues were killed and two others along with him were injured. Over the last year I have tried to find information about it in order to confirm that I was remembering the story correctly (40 years since the conversation). I have been unable to find out anything until I stumbled across this blog. I note that someone was trying to read copies of ships log for 23/01/17 and the names of the dead and injured were listed... With the exception of the surname of the AB seaman Charles xxx. My grandfathers name was Charles Meades and I now believe it is possible it was him who was injured in this incident. Is there anyway anyone could let me have a copy of the log to see if I can decipher the name. Thanks

I think you must be right. I have the service record of the Engineer Lieutenant, Francis Howard Lyon, which says he "gave meritorious service on the occasion of a collision between Landrail and Undaunted". I have been trying to find the date of that collision, without finding anything more specific than "April 1915" which each source has presumably copied from an earlier one, and that has been puzzling me because the date set against the meritorious service citation is quite clearly "24 Mar 1915". Mystery solved, methinks. Dan

Hello all, I am the Great Grandson of PO Stoker Frederick Briggs who died on Undaunted in 1915. I served 25 years in the RCN.

I would love to find more info on Fred, pictures of him or engineering department.  I see in a post above it says he died of illness. I have a copy of his record. He died after fracturing his skull after falling into a work boat.
