koyli Posted 2 July , 2003 Share Posted 2 July , 2003 JIm, Pte H.SPARROW 28115 is mentioned in the regt. war diary. he is on a nominal roll. This roll is stamped "Terr. Force Record Office WARLEY" dated 8 Oct 1917. In the roll which is refered to as Captain HOLBROOK's party and which details for the most, men from A Coy to which your fellow belongs. Also written on the page is mentioned how many killed, wounded, missing, and wounded and missing there were. This corresponds with the entry in the war diary for 20/09/17 which states : "Battalion in the trenches. The battalion made a raid. During the Raid the folowing casualties occurred. 2/Lieut T.G. TEASLE, M.C. wounded and missing. Other ranks :- Killed 8 Missing 4 Wounded and missing 3 wounded 13 Other casualties:- Lieut. G.R. JACOB, wounded. Other ranks:- Killed 3 Wounded 5 On the Roll which is typed, there is the letter M written in after Sparrow's name. There are also the letters K, WM, and W used behind other names. I presume your fellow was then Missing. If you want I will Email you copy of the relevant pages of the Diary. Very interesting. The Bn was in the line on the Messines Ridge area at Whitesheet. KOYLI. jim_davies Posted 3 July , 2003 Author Share Posted 3 July , 2003 Thanks that would be great: I'm not 100% sure but believe that Pte Sparrow my have been a cousin to one of my grea-grandfathers. Jim
