Remembered Today:

Old Fort at Seddülbahir

The Plummed Goose

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

The photo with the clock tower in the background is Çanakkale, or Chanak as it was know to the occupying forces. The tower still stands to this day though most of the buildings in the photo are long gone.

The photo with the large triangular cemetery in it is not Seddul Bahr as indicated in the caption, it is in fact Shrapnel Valley, circa 1921 or so, before the final cemetery was constructed.

The picture with the French officer in a white uniform shows the inside of the Seddul Bahr castle, which the French occupied and used as the base for their own war graves unit.

It is a bit hard to say if the photo of the French cemetery provided by SeaJane is the same as Sepoy's, as the design of the interim post war French burial sites was similar in a number of cases. SJ's picture is I think the Cimetiere de l'Ambulance, located just north east of Seddul Bahr village and right of the current road as you drive out of the village.

Hope this is of help.

Bill

It's not clear to me from which direction the original was taken, but here is the Çanakkale clock tower as it appears in recent years

[By the way, these clock towers seem to have been a popular idea in late Ottoman cities; there is one just it in Jaffa]

Some of you here are much better than I at the interpretation of aerial photographs

so, can you pick out the 'old fort'/Fort Doughty Wylie in this shot, which should give some idea of its extent/area

Hi Michael
It is the circular looking feature shown just above the centre of the photograph.
It is still quite visible in the landscape, as can be seen, at the centre top of the attached google earth photo.
