cazna Posted 18 May , 2005 Share Posted 18 May , 2005 Hi Can anyone tell me what insignia/badges a General in WWI would have worn to show that he was an Aide-de-Camp to an Australian Governor-General? Duncan
Greg Posted 19 May , 2005 Share Posted 19 May , 2005 Hi Duncan, This is a really esoteric area. I suspect that it has not changed all that much overtime however, so I suggest contactingthe Governor General's office to see what the rules are. The rules will vary according to what order of dressis involved ie service dress, blues etc. I would suspect that an aiguilette on the right shoulder would be involved. Governors General ,Governors, Lords Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants used to have a badge consisting of heraldic roses/ UK floral emblems- The Australian Governor General now has a badge with Australian floral emblem of wattle. In the absence of hte Governor General an Adminstrator can be appointed drawn from the State Governors and I have seen the personal flag of an Administrator in the museum of the Royal New South Wales Lancers. I have also seen special rank badges which include the Sovereign's cypher surmounted by a Crown instead of Regimental shoulder titles but these would not presumably apply to a General who does not wear regimental insignia! Which particular general are you thinking about? Regards Greg

cazna Posted 19 May , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 May , 2005 Thanks Greg, I will pursue the question with the Governor General's office in Canberra, hope I get a reply. I was thinking of Brigadier-General James Campbell Robertson, who I believe was appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Australian Governor General on 1st April 1917 while he was still serving in France. I am guessing this appointment was to take effect if the GG visited the UK while hostilities were ongoing. Any thoughts?? Duncan
Greg Posted 19 May , 2005 Share Posted 19 May , 2005 If he was serving and in France my guess is that obtaining special insignia may havebeen a bit difficult and perhaps his Brigadier's service dress uniform possibly with an aiguilette. Having said that it was amazing what military tailors could supply. Greg
