In the Regimental history of the 1/4th Duke of Wellingtons Regiment, they were at Estaires in April 1916.

The book says ''In Estaires the sound of guns could be clearly heard, and there the first aeroplane fight which anyone had seen was witnessed''.

Is this true or was it the first that this Battalion had witnessed?

Absolutely, airplanes were present on the battlefield from August 1914 on and fighting between planes began very soon (they shot at each other with rifles).

(they shot at each other with rifles).

The British used, amongst other weapons, the Martini-Henry Carbine which wasn't as wieldly as the full length weapon.

...............and grappling hooks attached with chains at the propellers. It should be remembered that the British started it, up till then pilots had just waved at each other when in the sky.
