John Burns (1/5th South Staffs)

Hi. I would also greatly appreciate any help with the interpretation of the MIC of my wife's great-uncle, John Burns. This brave man, serving with the South Staffordshire regiment, was tragically killed in action on the first day of the Somme, close to Gommecourt. Again, my wifes family cannot recall hearing about or seeing any posthumous medal(s), so we are curious to see if these were ever sent to or collected by Johns next-of-kin. Many thanks, Graham.

He was entitled to the 1915 Star,the British War medal and the Victory medal.

These would have been sent to his next of kin. You would have to look at the medal rolls to check they were not returned.

It also shows the date he arrived in France at the bottom. As the 1/5th S Staffs were part of the 46th Division who arrived in Farane late Feb 1915, this would indicate your man was sent out as part of a draft to replace men lost between March and June, when the Division were in the Wyschaete area
