Gîte Albertin, Rue d'Aveluy, Albert

Hedley Malloch

Recommended Posts

I spent five nights here earlier this month and would recommend it. Sleeps 4, two bedrooms, clean, well equipped and 400 yards from the centre of Albert and its station, watering holes + restos. Stairs are very steep and bathroom is downstairs. Cost is about £55 a night. Crucifix Corner and Norfolk CWGC are both about 1 hour's walk from front door. Host lives next door, does not speak any English, but we never saw him. More details on Booking.com web site

The bathroom downstairs seems to be a feature of most rental places in France.

and perhaps French houses in general Michelle.  We have a downstairs bathroom in ours, as does our neighbour.  We have a shower room with wc and basin upstairs too.

I don’t mind a shower or bath downstairs, it’s the toilet, more often than not down a very steep staircase, not great in the middle of the night……

our old French house,(re built after it was bombed during WW2) had a wc and basin on the ground floor and full bathroom upstairs.

most we viewed prior were single floor but with the usual cellar downstairs but many with new loft conversions, which would mean going downstairs to the loo.

Let's be glass half-full about this and regard a hazardous trip down steep, twisting stairs at 03:30 as part of the authentic living in a northern French house experience. Take the positives and regard it as a source of cultural enrichment. It is also a discouragement to heavy drinking the night before and therefore can be regarded as a health aid, almost one of your five-a-day.

When I was living in Lille, my next door neighbour died and I helped clear his bedroom. He was still using a chamber pot. My grandad had one too. One of the abiding memories of my infancy is crawling under his bed and being struck by the number of dead matches and hand-rolled fag ends floating about in his pot. He used it as a safety device when smoking in bed. That was 75 year ago and I can remember it as though it was yesterday. Now I cannot recall why my wife sent me to Lidl.

I could go on but perhaps it is best to leave it there. Too much information.

To return to the Gîte Albertin - I forgot to add that there is a great bakery 100 metres down the rue d'Aveluy.
