Steve1871 Posted 1 September Share Posted 1 September I know these Cutless bayonets were outdated before Great War, I wondering if in Cadet corps or officer corps at beginning of war, 1914-15 if they might have been I. Inventory since all other weapons were sorely needed at the front. Just wondering, just got another one. Anybody know? Opinions, guesses?
Chasemuseum Posted 1 September Share Posted 1 September The Royal Navy and dominion navies still issued and trained with cutlasses during WW1 but the cutlass bayonets were all for the .450/577 calibre black powder Martini-Henry rifles so were very much obsolete by WW1. They may have still seen some service with naval cadets, simply because the expansion of everything in 1914-1916 so totally overwhelmed the ability supply arms and equipment. Steve1871 Posted 3 September Author Share Posted 3 September Thank you Ross for reply!. I love collecting these, too bad most do not have their scabbards. Even a tiny roll in the Great War makes the “ Great Treasure Hunt” more interesting for collectors😊🎉
JMB1943 Posted 4 September Share Posted 4 September @Steve1871, I would have thought that we would want Cut-More bayonets, not Cut-Less! Regards, JMB
