Hello All

My gt uncle deserted in 1916 and his 1914 Star was forfeited. Is anyone able to tell me what the various codes are on his MiC.

Many thanks

Thomas George William GALL, 78399, Royal Field Artillery

Would be worth looking out his two medal rolls to see what is recorded on them [I can't access but available at Ancestry]

Would also be interesting to learn if he subsequently handed himself in and signed a Confession of Desertion - it was possible to do so [at least it was in 1922] on a King's Regs. prescribed form [Army Form A.46] and thus a trial under the Army Act, Section 75, be dispensed with.   Discharge to be under KR Para 392 xi [Misconduct] - discharge would I think be recorded as at date of desertion.

Do you happen to know where he deserted?

The way I read that Deserted 22/1/16, Still a Deserter rather make me think he deserted in the UK and was seemingly still at large c.1920/21 when they were getting round to sending out the BWM & VM and the Star returned 1921 [though I can't prove or disprove this by other documentation]

If he deserted in the UK then he may appear in a Police Gazette(s) [Not sure about if deserting overseas???] - I think likely local to his normal residence/NoK

Likewise if in the UK then the following book might be of interest: Deserters of the First World War: The Home Front, 2021, Andrea Hetherington

It looks like he seems to have officially re-surfaced eventually.

This rather looks like his death registration courtesy of Free BMD [sadly the forenames can't be double-checked at GRO]

Surname  First name(s)  Age  District  Vol  Page

Deaths Mar 1959   (>99%)
GALL  Thomas G W  65  Cardiff

Hello Matlock, Thanks for all that. The family were living in Cardiff  during the war and from what I've found out he joined the Merchant Navy. after the army. I've got his seaman's card somewhere (I'll need to dig it) he made quite a few voyages and received the Mercantile Marine Ribbon 19.9.19 British Medal Ribbon 19.9.19 Mercantile Marine Medal 16.4.21 British Medal 16.4.21. I think because of him his two other brothers Herbert and Arthur joined the Merchant navy and later another uncle joined the MN.

To then join/serve in the Mercantile Marine [MM] would not have been unique, but it would be interesting to learn more about his wartime MM etc.  His number and did he serve under his true name, or an alias, etc.  Do you have his MM Medals? [though I am not sure they will have his number]

Knowing his place and DoB would likely help clarify.

I'm currently looking at a MM MIC as Thomas GALL, Cardiff address, [stating born Dublin, 1891] and which could perhaps be his - The National Archives' reference BT 351/1/48855 ???

As it stands I am also looking at a Dublin, 10 Oct 1893 birth registration for a Thomas George William GALL [Father, Thomas E GALL and mother, Annie] ???

Do you know if, despite forfeiture of his 1914 Star, he received his Army BWM & VM?

Hello Matlock

Yes that's him.  He was actually born 5th Nov 1893, his father was serving with 1st Royal Dragoons at the Curragh.. Thomas had previously served in the RFA before the war 1908-1909 but was discharged as medically unfit. I've attached a page from his service record from them. I've also attached his MM seaman's card and MM medals card (not sure which ones your were looking at). I'm not 'sure if he received his BWM VM.

This was the birth registration I was looking at - I read: Born 10 Oct 1893, Registered 31 Oct 1893 - note the Seaman's Identitiy Certificate Card show 10 Oct 1891 [perhaps uncertainty on his behalf or possibly partially covering his tracks ???]  The 5 Nov 1893 date might perhaps have been a christening date ???
