My wife got me a Battlefield tour for my Christmas present last year, best thing she has ever got me. I knew my great grandfather served but not what he was involved in, so after a bit of research i have found out a few things, service number, awards, Battles he was involved in, what i am now looking for is any photographs of the battalion he may be in that might be out there somewhere, i have registered on a few sites to see if i can locate his medals (needle in a haystack i know). Any info or a pointer in the right direction would be much be appreciated.

Welcome to the 'GWF' Jonathan,

if you can post all that you know about your Great Grandfather it will help other members find out more about him.

Name, rank and any places that he lived at etc.

Regards,

Bob.

Hi Bob,

his name was Alfred Lee, service number 13524, he was with the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire regiment, was born in Clerkenwell in 1891, he was issued the three WW1 medals and a MM, for action in (I believe) in Trones Wood, he was Gassed at some stage and also shot. Spent some time in Bad Langasalzar POW camp. He survived the war. Died in 1941.

regards

Jon

If you haven't already got them:

War Diaries - currently free download after free registration at TNA

MM in London Gazette.

Member @Ivor Anderson might perhaps be able to help with the MM action date period

Pension index card at WFA/Fold3 shows he made an unspecified disability pension claim, card annotated: Trans 11.4.19 [presumably to Army Class Z Reserve] but a pension was Rejected 28/4/19 [All men at such transfer or discharge had the opportunity to mak a claim using Army Form Z.22 - however there had to be on-going disability at that point, some previous medical event in the past/on its own was not enough]

He is mentioned in the 54th Infantry Brigade history as one of those that were awarded medals at Boom Ravine on 17-2-1917 for "showing courage and good leadership in carrying on {when more senior officers and/or NCOs were incapacitated)."

When looking at that photo album be aware that not all of the photos are of the 6th Battalion. Some of them are from Lt. Co. Reginald Turner's earlier battalion in the Royal Fusiliers (including the front page photo!). However, all of the battalion line-up photos in front of the barn/trees are 6th Battalion.
