Hey guys, I'm looking for information regarding my great grandad Joseph Wm(William) Hawcroft.

He served with the West Yorkshire regiment 7th battalion 4258/266685 (don't know why he had two numbers)

He was awarded a victory medal, I have a few details but if anybody can offer more detailed info I would be grateful!

Welcome to the Great War Forum interestinghist,

I am confident that others will be able to tell you more about your Great Grandad once they have a look.

In the meantime, you should post an 'acknowledgement' of where you got the picture of his MIC from, as per the forum rules.

The words ''Picture of MIC are courtesy of .............................'' are all you need to do.

Regards,

Bob.

Should I just edit the acknowledgement into the post, and thank you

He has two numbers because the Territorial army Battalions were renumbered in 1917. His MIC shows his entitlement to the War, Victory and 1915 Star medals.

Please read the How To Research A Soldier on the Long Long Trail website. It will give you lots of pointers.

I have edited your thread title again. Vague thread titles really don’t help. If the experts can see the regiment concerned, you will get more help.

Thank you Michelle and sorry for making a sloppy mess of the post, my apologies.

The only details I have regarding him are that he was born in duffield in around 1885, he joined up around 1915. The below image shows two dates which I assume are his enlistment date and discharge date.

He farthered my grandad in 1943 but passed away in 1947.

I will visit the website you suggested and try to gather the tools I need to research better, thank you for your help

He enlisted 14/7/15 and was discharged 13/12/17. His MIC shows he entered a theatre of war, in this  case France, 27/12/15.

Id imagine there would be a pension record for him. I don’t have access to Fold 3 site to check this.

The following link will take you to the relevant war diaries. These are free to view free free registration. As you know when he arrived in France, you can follow his journey.

Indeed there are a number of pension records - Some under the surname HAWCROFT and others under HANCROFT [these latter appear to have been in error]

Unfortunately the most useful record, a pension ledger page under HAWCROFT, doesn't tell us what condition(s) [presumably wound(s)] he claimed for.

It gives his YoB as 1895, gives discharge as 14.12.17 and gives two addresses, first 2 Pitt Street, Albert Avenue, Hull and later 6 Johns Court, Spencer Street, Hull

The reverse shows a conditional, i.e. not final, pension award 15/7/22 at 60% disability Article 1(1) of the 1919 Royal Warrant 28/- pw from 3/7/22 to 3/7/23
