gunnerwalker Posted 12 May , 2024 Posted 12 May , 2024 (edited) Hi all I'm looking to find a snip of the photo of 2397 Pte. Arthur J. Hammond, 1/4th Btn., Gloucestershire Regiment. He previously worked at Avonmouth Docks and was killed on the 19th October 1915. Allegedly he appears in one of the GWR Staff Magazines. Find My Past gives the magazine reference as "1915/12/320. Photo: 1916/01/18". I've seen references in the past to GWR rolls of honour and galleries of employees who served but I'm not sure where or how to access these. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Archie Edited 12 May , 2024 by gunnerwalker
andrew pugh Posted 12 May , 2024 Posted 12 May , 2024 Hi Archie I worked on the railway several years ago as a signaller iI believe that the railway have a very good archive of all their employees from way back in time. I am not too sure where you go to see these records. Regards Andy
Moonraker Posted 13 May , 2024 Posted 13 May , 2024 The Steam Museum at Swindon has an almost complete collection of the staff magazine. A very quick look at the website showed no offers of a research service, but it's not far from North Bristol, and the museum is well worth a visit.
corisande Posted 13 May , 2024 Posted 13 May , 2024 This website has all the casualties with photos of GWR men from the magazine https://www.flickr.com/photos/gwr_casualties/albums/72157623520135696/

Malcolm Linham Posted 13 May , 2024 Posted 13 May , 2024 Archie Arthur John Hammond was employed by the GWR as a Mileage Porter in the Goods department at Avonmouth. He is also listed in the St Paul's Cathedral Service in memory of Railwaymen. Malcolm
gunnerwalker Posted 13 May , 2024 Author Posted 13 May , 2024 Thank you all for your help and suggestions. @corisande Thank you for that link, I suspect that will help for a few more I'm looking at. @Moonraker The museum sounds intriguing and, yes, pretty easy for me to get to. I'll try and get over there in the coming weeks. Thanks. @Allan1892 Well done for finding that and thanks for sharing. I've added the link to my file.
