corisande Posted 3 April Share Posted 3 April His army pension form gives NOK which gives him in 1911 census on Ancestry and 1881 census on Ancestry and in 1939 Register on Ancestry living at 17 Shirley Rd, the address on his 1914 NOK info So he was born 15 Jan 1875 and not in 20 Jun 1880 as he had on army form. He appears to have taken 5 years off his age in order to enlist I think he married Eliza Shaw in 1918

Matlock1418 Posted 3 April Share Posted 3 April (edited) Aaron HILL, 40159, South Staffordshire Regt. made an unspecified disability pension claim Image thanks to WFA/Fold3 Rec: 9.7.17 appears to be the date of receipt [presumably he applied whilst he was stilill in hospital before his discharge] 67807H was his pension claim reference. Awarded 30/7/17 a £45 Gratuity in lieu of an ongoing pension Seemingly likely awarded at that date under Article 7 (1) of the 1917 Royal Warrant "In any case where the degree of disablement is assessed at less than 20 per cent, or where it is considered more in the interest of the soldier, a gratuity or temporary allowance may be granted in place of any pension and children's allowances. The grant will be subject to such conditions at the Minister of Pensions may determine and its amount will not exceed £200 and will depend on the extent of the disablement and on the circumstances of the case" For all soldiers so awarded a Gratuity - Who and exactly how a gratuity was to be more in the interest of the soldier is not clearly determined. Neither are the possible conditions that might have been applied [If anyone has documented evidence I, and no doubt other members, would be pleased to know what those details might have been]. TEW Posted 3 April Share Posted 3 April I don't know where the tag was found but the diary for the 7th S Staffs. shows them to have taken over trenches at Beaucourt-sur-l'Ancre 20/11/16. His record says he was wounded shell shock 21/11/16 and the dairy mentions 5 men with shell shock that day. The following day they had more casualties by shell just east of Beaucourt-sur-l'Ancre 57d.R.7.b.9.1 Could this be the location of the find? I understand if you'd rather not say.
