vinniemac Posted 19 November Share Posted 19 November Looking to help an extended family member with recently discovered info on her grandfather. She has a group photo titled,”T” Company,3 rd Reserve Battalion.Scots Guards 1916.This is the only information she has on his service in WW1 apart from the fact he survived. His full name was John Thom, born 1891 in Kilspindie,Perthshire to David and Catherine Thom.Would like to help my sister in law by filling in any possible history of his service if possible.I don’t have his service number either. Many thanks in advance. Vince

Bordercollie Posted 19 November Share Posted 19 November If 11146 is your man there is a fairly full service record on Ancestry here https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/812564:1114?tid=&pid=&queryId=2dc6e171002846fe1a6ca0a8b2206b94&_phsrc=xaC91&_phstart=successSource It shows that he enlisted in September 1914 when he was 23 years old and then employed as a policeman. He served in France with 1/Scots Guards and transferred to 3/Scots Guards in the UK in 1917.

Vince The Scots Guards soldiers' records are not from the "burnt" or "unburnt" record sets. They are the copies of the soldiers' records which were retained by the regiment. The record set is also available at FindmyPast. FindmyPast also have the Scots Guards attestation registers. RM
vinniemac Posted 19 November Author Share Posted 19 November Thanks for that piece of information..does this apply to other Regiments as well?

No. The other Guards regiments also retained their soldiers' records. Those records are in process (I believe) of transfer to The National Archives. The "I believe" relates to the stage of the process. They are no longer available through the regimental archives and not yet available at The National Archives (I believe). I believe that in some cases some attestation/ admission registers are at regimental archives. RM

RM I haven’t looked at his SG record on FMP or the papers on Ancestry but I suspect the papers held on Ancestry are from the post WW1 Chelsea “Pension Papers” (WO 363 ?)and may be more extensive than those on FMP due to more recent culling of WW1 records. I requested my CG grandfather’s papers from RHQ CG some years ago and received 4 pages but I subsequently found he had more than 30 pages on Ancestry. Steve If they come from ancestry you are correct. I believe that Fold3 now has the same set as FmP. RM
