Welcome to the forum. Can you provide information like date and place of birth, parents etc? I’m sure that would help forum members to assist you. What evidence do you have the he was a member of the unit you state?

The unit name along with time frame was entered on his Military Records for World War II - Canadian Regimental number is B89898 with 5 Fld Amb from Hamilton ON.  He woudl have been very young for WW I and was born 24 Novemeber 1901 in Glamorgan, Cardiff Wales.

I have searched WW1 records for your man and I haven't found anything. As you said, he was born on the 24 November 1901, he would have been approaching his 17th birthday after WW1 ended not reaching his 18th birthday until 24 November 1919 thus he would have been too young to serve. The only possibility would have been if he lied about his age and also enlisted under an alias.

There were two eras for Volunteer Battalions/Regiments:

1.  1859 to 1908.  Originally independent local units of volunteers who drilled locally in accordance with the Volunteer Act and were dispersed throughout the then British Empire.  In Britain they were, in 1881, reformed to become part-time Volunteer Battalions (VB) of the regular army infantry regiments.  In 1908 they were replaced without being removed from the statute book by a new organisation of auxiliary units, the Territorial Force.
See:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_Force

2.  1917 to 1919.  Initially a civilian force known as the Volunteer Training Corps (VTC) they were, by resurrecting the original ‘Volunteer Act’, reconfigured as Volunteer Regiments (later Volunteer Battalions) under the auspices of the War Office.  They comprised the very young (pre conscription age) the very old (above military age) and conscripts whose mobilisation had been delayed for a variety of reasons.  For convenience they came under the administration of the Territorial Force.  They carried out local defence duties near to their homes and were stood down after the Armistice.  See:

Based on his age it seems probable that Horace Philp served in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Welsh Regiment based in Dumfries Place, Cardiff.  Attached below is an extract from the 1919 Volunteer List showing the officers of the battalion.  These were part-time soldiers recruited locally and any records of their service were maintained locally.  If any records of the unit have survived the most likely place to hold them would be the Glamorgan Archives https://glamarchives.gov.uk/  but if any records have survived they are highly unlikely to include any details of men who served in the unit.
