Gunner William Ivor Jones 93082 was my great uncle. He died 30 Nov 1917 at Paschendaele. If anyone has further details, I would love to know. I am hoping to visit his grave next year.

Welcome to the forum @Smarchez. As you’d posted on a very old thread, I’ve split this into a new separate thread to hopefully get you some more information. To save duplication of effort, what do you already know about him?

His Medal Index Card shows his entitlement to the War and Victory Medals, meaning he didn’t serve in a theatre of war until after 01/01/1916.

He has a surviving service record that shows, inter alia, that he was posted from the Siege Artillery Depot in England to the BEF France on 24/6/17 and joined 217 Siege Battery on 29/6/17.

Thank you so much for this info. I'm grateful for anything anyone knows. I feel so connected to him, having found out about him. He was 21 when he died. He was from Colwyn in North Wales.

So he lasted only five months in that hell hole. Poor William.

Thank you Charlie. Can I find this online? I've come to a halt.

It's on Findmypast (free this weekend I think so hurry!). But I cannot get link to work!

Search for surname Jones and service number 93082 and you should get it.

Gosh, Class 3a on medical examination at call-up.
'Fit for Garrison duty abroad'.
Must have been caught in the great comb-out of 1917.

Good to hear there is still information arriving on the 217th Siege Battery.

@Smarchez do you have a picture of Gunner William Ivor Jones 93082 was your great uncle?

I have in the past tried to name all the people in the photo I have of the Battery taken in Arras January 1917. I have about 90 names but have so far only managed to have the names of 3 including my Grandfather.

I will dig out my research a see if I have Gunner Jones details.

I would love to put another name to the faces in the picture.

Thank you all for your replies to my message.  I'm so grateful for any info.  I think there may have been (at least?!) two William Jones in that period in the 217th Siege Battery.  It's not an uncommon name in Wales!  I think my William Jones died at age 21 in 1917, whereas the record posted above shows an enlistment age of 38.  I need to dig deeper and, when I do and have ascertained the correct record (and possibly service number), I'll post again.  Perhaps 93082 is the other Wiliam Jones - certainly looks like it.  I'll be in touch!  Many thanks.

PS I do have a photo which I think is 'my' William Jones.  I've attached it to see if anyone knows anything about it.  He doesn't look 38, so that's a good start.  (Also, he looks a lot like my son but perhaps that's just my wishful thinking).

I've managed to save it to my desktop.  I'll print if off.  I'm so grateful.  You've really brought WIlliam to life.  Thank you.  Now I need to do some more detective work as I think I may have confused his paperwork with the other William Jones....  Onward and upward!  Thanks again.
