Hi there,

researching the above sodier.  A service record extract is below.  From Oct 1916 – Jan 1919 he was a Gen Duty Medical Orderly in Macedonia.  Can I ask what the area of operations abbreviation (looks like) B&F stand for? Balkans and France?

I cannot see any reference to France in his service record - he appears to have spent all his overseas time in Salonika and so would suggest BSF = British Salonika Force?

If the page layout followed the normal format then the actual dates are the ones in the fifth column - the ones in the first column are when the notification itself was dated.

As he had just come out of hospital after a week being treated for Gastro-enteritis, I suspect R.C. refers to Rest Camp.

As spellings varied even at the time as a result of multiple languages and then again subsequently over the years as frontiers were fought over, I suspect you need a forum pal like @Keith_history_buff or @Gardenerbill - and if they don't know they will probably know someone who does :)

Forum pal @Dai Bach y Sowldiwr may be able to help with the conditon before secondary "anamia" that is reported on the line dated 17.8.17.

I suspect the entries after the form number are the initials of the clerk who checked the entries had been added correctly.

Cheers,
Peter

Karaizai

The challenge with place names in Greece, apart from anglicised spelling, is that they were renamed in 1926 as part of the Hellenisation process.

The nearest I could find on the following site was Kara-kjoj of which there are two settlements with that name:

Clutching at straws, and looking at the same website, do these come close?

Karadzha                   Evangelizmos
Karadzha-kjoi (Solun)      Kartera
Karadzha-kjoi (Drama)      Tolos

Playing around with Google has brought up the following on this forum

Karrasie rest camp

@Blue Dragoon I see that it is located between Lembet and Salonika, as per a map you posted on that other thread.

Karaissi was on the edge of Salonika about halfway between the docks and Lembet Camp, east of the road. The area is now the suburb of Neapoli (approximately). It would have been opposite (i.e. across the road) from the main French and Serbian camp at Zeitenlick (Stavroupoli).

Further mention of that location, Karaissi, on LLT

Three different ways of spelling the name of the place. Very tricky.
