Tavern Druid Posted 8 November , 2023 Share Posted 8 November , 2023 Hi Forum I wonder if anyone can help with this query. My Cousin found a British War Medal amongst her Fathers Cousins effects. And I am trying to find out who this man was to see if he was part of their family. The medal is impressed with the following 182895 Dvr A Cook R. A. Driver Alfred Cook Royal Field Artillery, has a Medal Index card confirming the above and that he was also entitled to the Victory Medal but not either of the Stars. The MiC does not state which theatre of war first served in or a date when he entered service therein. I have tried to find a Medal Roll for him but without any success. There appears to be no service record either, presumably it is one of those destroyed in WW2. So, I have tried to trace any other relevant details him via his service number. I have looked in the Great War Medal Collectors Companion, Williamson Vol 3, but there as far as I can see no numbers which are close to Alfred’s. Army Service Numbers 1881-1918 has also been checked. I am hoping someone may be able to find a clue from these limited details so that I can go on and research his life. There were a lot of A Cook’s who joined so this is going to be difficult, I think. Thanks for reading this. David
David Porter Posted 8 November , 2023 Share Posted 8 November , 2023 The number 182895 was issued in mid January 1917 at No. 4 Depot RFA, Woolwich. This explains the lack of a Star medal. Also he would have enlisted in the South East of England to have arrived at Woolwich Depot. Where he went from there will be difficult to ascertain. I would agree that there are a lack of service records for numbers close to his.

You type in his number and his surname - and hey presto - there it is just like magic Cook - UK, World War I Service Medal and Award Rolls, 1914-1920 - Ancestry.co.uk Regards Russ
