Lt. Colonel Osmond Charteris Du Port

I have a DSO group of medals to the above fellow who served in command of 35 Brigade, R.F.A. in France from 11 March 1916 to 4 February 1917 where after he was sent to the army of the Rhine.

Could anyone share any of his other movements or information about him please? I know that he was M.I.D. X5 in WWI. This what the LLT has to say about the 35th -

  • This brigade was originally comprised of numbers 12, 25 and 58 Batteries and a Brigade Ammunition Column.
  • It was based at Woolwich in August 1914. In September 1914 it moved to Ashurst in the New Forest of Hampshire and was placed under command of the new 7th Division.
  • The brigade departed from Southampton on 4 October 1914 and landed at Zeebrugge in Belgium on 6 October. It continued toi serve with 7th Division for the rest of the war, being in France and Flanders until late 1917 when it moved to northern Italy.
    • 16 May 1916: the Brigade Ammunition Column left, to be merged into 7th Divisional Ammunition Column.
    • 17 May 1916: 31 (Howitzer) Battery, less one section, joined from 37 (Howitzer) Brigade (also in 7th Division but which was being broken up). It was made up to full strength on 13 February 1917 by the arrival of a section from 509 (Howitzer) Battery.

The starting point must be the War Diary, here at National Archives.

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=Wo95+"35+brigade+royal+field"&_sd=&_ed=&_hb=

Otherwise:

Plugging DuPort into the search facility on the RA Museum documents on AMOT brings up a few hits that may be of interest, incl Boer War.

Here's an example:

Newspapers (free this weekend on FindmyPast??) add a little re 1900

Thank you very much Charlie - I had no idea of the existence of AMOT - this has been a real eye opener.

Thanks Terry - that's interesting - I have it that Du Port was WIA on 14 November 99 and not 6 January 1900 - what is your source for this info?

If anyone is interested, herewith my "finished article" on Du Port - they don't make them like that anymore!
