My great grandfather sold horses to the army at Doncaster during WW1.

His name was Joseph Moorhouse. Where would I find records for this. Apparently he was quite a character.

Thanks, Helen Graham. Queensland Australia

Have you tried the local archives in Doncaster, or Doncaster Racecourse?

Helen.

Your Gt Grandfather would have had a copy of a book issued by the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries.

It gives details of horses that were acceptable for service in the British Army.

Each branch had different requirements. The types listed are, Household Cavalry, Cavalry of the Line, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers & Army Service Corps & Mounted Infantry.

Apart from a detailed description an example photograph is provided.

I have include the first page for info. I am sure your G Grandfather would have known what windsucker and parrotmouth refer to, but I dread to think.

It may be quite difficult to get specifics on him as he appears to be a civilian, like Kate suggests, it would be best to contact the area record office with as much information as you can give them.

Is he the J Moorhouse listed as aged 28, living in Accrington Lancs, and employed in the textile industry as a Cotton Twister?

I see that there is someone interested in researching all Moorhouses with Doncaster connections, he is on this website Doncaster FHS

His email is bruce.isted@xtra.co.nz (a Kiwi I note).

John.
