I am looking for my grandfather he was in the 178th, D/188th 15th Howitzer Bridge and I think it was the Newham Branch and he's Military Regiment was L29972. I have searched everywhere with out success. He was born in 1883. his name was John Joseph Thomas White.

if this isn't allowed please let me know and if anybody can help me It would be most appappreciated.

Welcome to GWF.

A disability claim pension index card at the Western Front Association / Fold3 shows several numbers that you and other members perhaps should also use in searches 61054, 447093, 29972.

And indicates Labour Corps at point of discharge

Discharged 6.4.19

Living in 36 Biddet St, Canning Town E 16 and claim Rejected

M

Edit: Medal Index Card under 29972 RFA, 447093 LC,

Correction of Fold3 transcription = delete 61054 - that was part of his Chelsea Hospital pension reference Z Lab. 61054

Both the numbers you have mentioned 29972 was the bridge one and the number 447093 was the Labour Corps

Labour Corp number 447093 - from 'No Labour, No Battle' by Starling & Lee - appears to have been issued approximately October 1917 to January 1918 [covers the range of 394500 to around 484900]

John Joseph enlisted on July 3, 1915 in 178th East Ham Howitzer Brigade RFA and was posted to the Brigade Ammunition Column. Whilst still in the UK the brigade was reorganized whereby A, B and C Battery were redistributed as D batteries in 181, 185 and 188 Brigades RFA. The 188th Brigade RFA landed in France on June 5, 1916 with 40th Division. However, his service record shows he was at Hilsea on September 28, 1916 (absent for 2 hours) which could suggest he was retained at home a little longer. His eventual posting to France looks likely on December 21, 1916 from 15th Reserve Battery (also based at Hilsea). He is held at the Base Depot at Le Havre until posting to C Battery, 79th Brigade RFA on January 14, 1917. However, within a month he is back at Base Depot due to Haemorrhoids. A subsequent posting is to D Battery, 174th Brigade RFA (39th Division) on April 5, 1917 but he suffers an inflammation of the knee in June 1918 which is severe enough to take him away from the front line. He is transferred to 167th Labour Company on November 7, 1918 but within a month, whilst on leave to the UK, he is demobilized via Purrfleet to Class Z Army Reserve and returned home to 36 Riddle Street, Canning Town.

Just highlighting the error. The following ex RFA men were renumbered upon temp and compulsory trf to LC:

447083  6/11/18

447084  7/11/18

447089  7/11/18

447093  7/11/18

Just quoting NL, NB = Perhaps something to take up with Starling & Lee ?? [Not sure that is easily done these days]

I think it's an example where a block within a block of numbers were given to a base depot in France to issue so fall way outside the main block dates which were issued in UK.

Handy input.  That does seem plausible [but I am not qualified to take this matter further].

Hi

Just wanted to thank you David for the information you sent me.

I was wondering if you knew or can point me in the right direction to find out if he was awarded any medals.

I have tried searching for him and his military records I have found his records on Family Search and found his Military Records but nothing else. my cousin has sent me a photo of him in his uniform sitting on a horse.

Thanks for your response

As earlier mentioned a MIC is avaialble [and likely a Medal Roll too]

Here is the MIC - at TNA https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6259332

Alternatively [the same one] from Ancestry

Thanks to Ancestry

First as 29972 RFA, 447093 LC,

= British War Medal and Victory MedaL awarded [No 1914-15 Star as outside the relevant period for first ToW - needed to land pre-1 Jan 1916]
