Remembered Today:

What was a navy gratuity, and how much ?

My relative Bertie Cains seems to have signed up for 12 years in 1917, but had to be invalided out in 1922.  He received a gratuity, so I wondered how the gratuity scheme worked and much it was ? He didn't seem to get a pension ( his pension card says no award ?) but was pretty well off in later life.  There is a web page about army gratuities here   https://wargratuity.uk/war-gratuity-calculator/  Thanks very much

I have discussed his war record ( and in the Russian revolution)  in previous threads.

I am not famiiar with the details of the Admiralty-administered War Grauity (as paid in this case) but I would be very surprised if it differed in any significant respect from the scheme administered by the War Office. Your link to the 'calculator' should provide an answer to your query. The main difference was probably the comparison of "service overseas" (WO) and "embarked service" (ADM).

This random link  -  https://www.crichparish-ww1.co.uk/ww1webpages/wargratuity.html#:~:text=Unlike the service gratuity the,1914 and 3rd August 1919.   gives an example:-  "Private  Service with overseas service = £5 for the first 12 months service then 10s per month."  For an RN junior rate (Ord Sea/AB) serving at sea 1916-18 this could give a WG of about £17. The GWF has some real experts in the WG - hopefully they will leap in to shoot down my guess.

As I understand it, a disability gratuity was paid to men (invalided with less than 10 years qualifying service) in lieu of a disabilty pension - this was dependent upon three elements, length of service, degree of disability and rank - see link below….
