soltown Posted 9 April , 2005 Author Share Posted 9 April , 2005 Thanks, that means it probably is the guy I'm researching, all I knew was he was gassed during the war and he was born in Yorkshire.

Stebie9173 Posted 11 April , 2005 Share Posted 11 April , 2005 George, This type of card is for recipients of the Silver War Badge for soldiers discharged from service due to wounds &/or ill health. The stamped box is for his Service/Campaign Medal entitlement. He was entitled to the Victory Medal and British War Medal for operational service overseas (there are other rules but that was basically it). Since he entered a Theatre of War , i.e. France, between 23-11-1914 and 31-12-1915 he was also entitled to the 1914-15 Star. (Before 22-11-1914 the 1914 Star aka Mons Star was the award if in France & nothing after 1-1-16). These three medals are known as a "Trio" or sometimes "Pip, Squeak & Wilfred" after a cartoon strip of the time. The cards are explained her: http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchive...v.uk/medals.asp or here: http://www.1914-1918.net/mics.htm Hope this helps, Steve.
