Alan24 Posted 23 May Share Posted 23 May Appreciate anyone who can decipher the handwriting here. Nearly there just a few words not making sense. Some context which may be relevant - He's just arrived back at Hazeley Down Camp off leave. He would have travelled to the nearest railway station, Shawford, which is three miles away. Just arrived back in ??? better time condition than thought I should do. I wrote you from ??? roda. Three miles again ??? Best love Percy x. Alan24 Posted 23 May Author Share Posted 23 May (edited) Thanks Michelle & Martin - spot on. A bit more context - He was from Devon/Cornwall so I think it is "I wrote you from Exeter today." The last bit...could it be "Three miles again tomorrow"? Edited 23 May by Alan24

Thank you Phil, thank you David. Between all four of you, I think you've solved it. This chap is from the Civil Service Rifles Writing to his future wife. johntaylor Posted 24 May Share Posted 24 May Hi, I'm pretty sure it says "Just arrived back - in far better time & condition than I thought I should do. I wrote [you?] from [?] today. Will write again tomorrow." The implication is he'd just got back to camp from a route march or training exercise. John

John I'm leaning back towards 'time & condition' again, rather than living conditions. I still think he's back from leave. He was born in Bideford Devon and prior to enlisting was working in Penzance. The card is a picture of Barnstable Devon although the postmark is Hazeley Down. He probably bought the PC whilst on leave. He probably visited family in Devon just before returning having also visited his future wife in Penzance, who the card is addressed to. Barnstaple is on a direct rail line to Exeter and he would have passed through Exeter to get back to Shawford/Winchester.
