qahtan Posted 19 June , 2003 Share Posted 19 June , 2003 Is there a list of all the men that were classed as the Old Contemptibles. I was told there was one such list in Westminster Abbey. I have since found it is a plaque to these men unveiled by the Queen Mother in 1993?
Paul Reed Posted 20 June , 2003 Share Posted 20 June , 2003 The only 'list' as such would be the 1914 Star medal rolls at the PRO/NA - to be classed as an Old Contemptible, you had to serve in France/Flanders August-November 1914 and be awarded the 1914 ('Mons') Star. There was an Old Contemptibles Association after the war, but its records have not survived.
qahtan Posted 20 June , 2003 Author Share Posted 20 June , 2003 Thanks Paul. Yes, my Dad qualified to be an Old Contemptible, I have miniatures of his medals, also the Old Contemptible lapel clasp. His original medals are at Regimental Headquarters, Birdcage Walk, London,UK . I did ask the Guards I could have them, and they answered, they would rather they stayed there for every one to see if they wanted. The Guards reclaimed them from a pawn shop many many years ago when money was short. qahtan
