Morning all

I'm researching the above soldier who appears on the Hereford Cathedral School Roll of honour but am having a little difficulty establishing exactly when he served with both the units he was assigned to.  I know he joined 123rd Outrams Rifles but it is exactly when he transferred to 125th Napiers Rifles that is fixing me.  I know from the 125th War Diary he died at the Battle of Istabulat on 21st April 1917 when he was acting as the Temporary Adjutant of the 125th. I am making an assumption he transferred to the 125th when the 21st (Bareilly) Brigade possibly with Outrams Rifles, sailed from Marseilles to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra on 23rd December 1915.   I believe again from the war diary that on 1st January 1916 the 125th were assigned to the composite 19th Brigade within 7th (Meerut) Division.  The 21st (Bareilly) Bde Orbat on LLT is work 'in progress.  I understand the 19th Brigade Order of Battle (see 125th war diary entry attd) within the 7th Meerut Division with effect from 1 Jan 1916 included:

1st Seaforths

125th Napier’s Rifles

92nd Regiment (Gordon Highlanders or Punjabis?)

28th Punjabis

any suggestions as to when he transferred appreciated.

cheers

George

No opinion on Mr Harris' movements, but the 92hd Highlanders had been 2/Gordons since 1881 so I'd suspect that the 92nd mentioned above may have been Punjabis

many thanks 6RRF

Charles’ London Gazette entry confirms he was assigned to the 123rd Outram’s Rifles with effect from 31st October 1915.  Records show the 123rd Outram’s Rifles did not mobilise fully till November 1916 and did not leave India for Egypt for service in Palestine until 18th January 1917 although it did provide drafts of reinforcements to the 24th Punjabis AND 125th Napier’s Rifles beforehand.

The 125th Napiers Rifles, as part of the 7th (Meerut) Division's 21st (Bareilly) Brigade, had sailed from Marseilles to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra on 23rd December 1915.  On 1st January 1916 the 125th were assigned to the composite 19th Brigade within 7th (Meerut) Division.  The Brigade Order of Battle (Orbat) included:

·         1st Seaforths

·         125th Napier’s Rifles

·         92nd Regiment (Punjabis)

·         28th Punjabis

It cannot yet be confirmed but I am working on the possibility that Charles joined the 125th Napier’s Rifles sometime in the period October to December 1915. The 125th Napier’s Rifles War Diary is pretty comprehensive in recording which officers joined the Regiment and when and there is not a record of Charles joining between January 1916 and his death in April 1917.

Found it!  The War Diary reports that Charles joined the 125th Napier’s Rifles on 22nd September 1916.
