Mike Bourne Posted 28 March , 2023 Share Posted 28 March , 2023 Attached are records of my grandfather who served in the RFA in WW1 as a gunner supposedly in Mesopotamia. His regiment as you can see is the 2nd MES Brigade for which I've assumed the MES is short for Mesopotamia. To prove or disprove whether he served in Mesopotamia I need to decipher the service record. All I've managed so far is the attestation for duty which states he worked at George Kynoch in Witton, Birmingham, an ammunition factory that became part of ICI and ultimately IMI. He did by the way lie about his age on enrolment, he was actually born in 1898 not 1896 as his father had died tragically and he hated his stepfather. Any help would be very much appreciated. ss002d6252 Posted 28 March , 2023 Share Posted 28 March , 2023 His WFA Pension record card doesn't add much in this case. I assume the RAF reference is an error for RFA.https://www.fold3.com/image/700154201?terms=109806 Craig
ss002d6252 Posted 28 March , 2023 Share Posted 28 March , 2023 I'd suggest that the 2A is the reference to the Reserve Brigade he was with. Craig
Mike Bourne Posted 28 March , 2023 Author Share Posted 28 March , 2023 He actually joined the RAF in 1921 until 1930, then again in 1939 to 1953, 23 years in total. So the MES is actually Res? Thanks
