Pt. Wm. Henderson, KOSB and RAF Transcription help

I have a man named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian as WILLIAM HENDERSON, King's Own Scottish Borderers.

His Pension Cards have him as Private 22823 3rd KOSB. Resident in Haddington. Mother Agnes.

From the 1901 census he would seem to be William born 1900 in Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire. Father Thomas and mother Agnes.

The is a RAF Airman service record for a William Henderson, 180.132 born June 1900 in Prestonpans Service Date 9/7/1918 Parent Thomas.

I cannot access these records - can anyone provide a transcription please?

I'd love to know if this is the same man and if there is ant report of a death.

Cheers

The serial number is 180134.

William Henderson.

Born Preston Pans (sic), 24/06/1900.

Enlisted RAF: (Pte 2) 09/07/1918. Age: 18.

Labourer.

Person to be informed of Casualties: Mrs Thomas Henderson, Glen Kinchie (?), Pencaitland, East Lothian. (Mother)

Transferred to Class G Reserve (RAF): 20/01/1919.

Trade Classification: Cadet (Flyng)

(RAF, Airmen's Records: FmP)

No indications of death.

(There are also entries for his service movements, but I suspect the above is what you want.)

It might be worth checking that he didn't die while still in G Reserve - I have found an RAF man on a war memorial who died while in G Reserve.

This looks to be his birth registration on ScotlandsPeople which tells us that his mother's maiden name was Veitch.

HENDERSON    WILLIAM    VEITCH    M    1900   718 / 60    Prestonpans

ScotlandsPeople have slowly been updating death registrations to show mother's maiden name, they were routinely recorded and indexed from 1974 onward, but they're now in the process of updating records prior to this and currently they are indexed from the advent of statutory registration in 1855 to the early 1930's and then again from 1974 onward. As rolt968 has indicated, there is no sign of a death registered in Scotland for a William Henderson, mother's maiden name Veitch between 1919 and the early 1930's, or indeed post-1974. The best guess would be that if he died in Scotland, his death occurred sometime between the early 1930's and 1974.

Thanks for all this info folks.

I've done a bit more "digging".

From the Death Register of Ormiston Parish In Haddingtonshire (now East Lothian) William was living at 3 Newton Street in Edinburgh when he registered the death of his father in March 1919. Thomas Hay Henderson was a cooper in the distillery at Glenkinchie, married to Agnes Veitch, when he died on 9 March 1919 as the result of contracting influenza.

William was still in Edinburgh in November 1949 when he registered the death of his mother Agnes in Edinburgh on 25 November 1949.

I'm now beginning to wonder if the listing of William on the Haddington War Memorial is a case of mistaken identity based on his father's death or if the Pension Card refers to another William Henderson of the KOSB?????

Any insights would be welcome, please.

A transcript of the Pension Card would be nice!

Thanks to a pal on the Scottish War Memorials Project who found not only his pension card but also his service record, I now know I have been mixing two William Hendersons - both with a mother named Agnes!

William Henderson enlisted as Private 22823 in the King's Own Scottish Borderers in January 1916 but he was discharged in March as unlikely to become an efficient soldier.

William died of TB at the family home at 31 Hope Park, Haddington on 5 February 1918. Father Robert Mother Agnes (Goodall) Henderson.
