Jennifer Newman Posted 16 March , 2023 Posted 16 March , 2023 I have this bayonet and would appreciate any feedback on its history. With thanks
peregrinvs Posted 16 March , 2023 Posted 16 March , 2023 1907 Pattern bayonet made by Wilkinson in 1916. Re inspected in 1928. I expect others will go into more detail.
AndyBsk Posted 17 March , 2023 Posted 17 March , 2023 Questionable is the complet reblueing same as the grips looks like replacements. Other point was described by peregrinus.
JMB1943 Posted 20 March , 2023 Posted 20 March , 2023 Hello Jennifer, Welcome to the Forum! The stampings on the left ricasso (first photo) show, Crown / G R = royal cypher of G(eorgius) R(ex) = King George V 1907 = the Pattern date, i.e., when this particular design was "sealed" to govern future production. WILKINSON = manufacturer, Wilkinson Sword Co. Ltd, Acton, West London The stampings on the right ricasso (second photo) show, Broad arrow (commonly referred to as a crowsfoot) = acceptance & ownership by British Govt. Three crown / number / E = three inspection stamps applied at different stages of manufacture; the inspectors were all employees of the RSAF, stationed at Wilkinson to inspect their products. Each inspector had his own stamp, issued at Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield. (RSAF) X = denotes that bayonet had passed the blade test. Crown / 46 / E = the re-inspection stamp applied when the bayonet was re-inspected (and passed) in 1928. Nicely refurbished, mid-war bayonet; scabbard also in very good shape. REgards, JMB
Jennifer Newman Posted 20 March , 2023 Author Posted 20 March , 2023 Thank you so much for this information. I am delighted to own this as my grandfather went to the trenches twice so I am so interested in the history
JMB1943 Posted 20 March , 2023 Posted 20 March , 2023 Jennifer, If you start a new thread with your g’father’s name and regiment in the header (include date of birth/ place of birth/ regiment/ service number from medals etc in the text of your question) the detectives here will dig up all sorts of info for you. Most importantly, they will direct you to the War Diary of his unit which will give you details on where he served in war zone. Regards, JMB PS My g’father also served as an infantryman on the Western Front, which is what brought me to this wonderful forum.
