poona guard Posted 22 January Share Posted 22 January Does anyone have photos that show the badges worn by the 1st/4th. 1st/5th and 12th battalions or examples of the badges worn by the first two battalions?
PRC Posted 22 January Share Posted 22 January I don't know if some of these images on the Picture Norfolk website are of any use - you'd need to request permission to use. https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=720493 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=720566 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=918442 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=722068 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=722089 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=722237 https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=1136636 Note the same site has a collection of pictures of over 1,000 servicemen from the county who made the ultimate sacrifice. I don't know if others may be of help to you like this 4th East Yorks man. https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=722021 or 4th Lincolns https://norfolk.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/WPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=721669 Unfortunately many of the pictures are either headshots or head to toe - either way badges on display are usually at best cap badges, and I'm not aware of any distinction specific to the Territorial Force when it comes to those. My own collection mainly comes from contemporary newspapers, so far too low resolution to pick out that sort of detail, and usually cropped to a headshot. I've not seen him about recently but forum member @rob carman takes a keen interest in the TF Battalions of the Norfolk Regiment and may have something he can contribute. Cheers, Peter
max7474 Posted 22 January Share Posted 22 January As far as I am aware there was no TF variant of the Norfolk Regt cap badge.

Cheers, Peter They’re great quality photos Peter, but unfortunately almost all taken at home in studio portraits, or at annual training camps, and mainly early in the war going by the Imperial Service tablets on view. Photos in France 1916 onward seem to be rarer, but they’re the ones that more commonly show the cloth battle insignia sought. Of course fellows home on leave in the second half of the war do more often show the cloth arm insignia worn, although not always, as men were quite often given clean/new uniforms after they’d been deloused and attended a bath/shower house. The era of such badges unfortunately coincided with a much more thorough process for men departing on leave with a view to them not being seen in scruffy, frontline soiled uniform. The penultimate link you posted of a 4th East Yorks man does seem to show the kind of arm badge being looked for. As you say, perhaps Rob Carman might have something.
