Lower enlistment criteria were permitted. As such, there could be an age or medical fitness reason to be uncovered as to why he did not end up in a local front line Middlesex Battalion like his younger brothers. He’s wearing TF shoulder titles in both photos and yet wears no Imperial Service tablet, so there’s a good chance that he was home service category until the military service act of 1916. At that point he’d presumably have been sent to a reserve battalion and selected for suitable employment and deployment. Perhaps initially an infantry Labour company, but whatever, somehow his grading clearly led him to the Labour Corps.
