Does anyone know what this badge would be? no amount of reference books I have checked have had anything remotely like it. It is possibly a copy as it is not overly high on craftsmanship.

Pre Gaddafi Libyan Army button I think.  Probably 1950s. Certainly insignia of an Arabic nation, or possibly connected with the Ottoman era.

However, it’s notable that the eagles head is facing the other way.  Is your image inadvertently reversed?

Apparently that is the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Syria which is the 'Hawk of Qureish'. According to wiki there are a number of different versions depending on the date... the button looks like 1980 to present. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Syria

Well done, I think you’re right.  I could see the stars even though they’ve been almost rubbed away.

The only issue is there are three stars on the button with vehicle lines either side representing the colours of the flag. The versions on wiki and online that have three stars don't have the vertical lines.... other than that the eagle is spot on.

Yes here’s the version with three stars to compare.  I imagine it means something.  Provinces or such like.

Oh yes, the top one is identical to the button.... apparently the stars relate to the flag which, depending on what regime was in power, had two or three stars....

Yes I think so.  There still seems to be some residual loyalty as it’s now the emblem of the Free Syria Army.
