This example from Isleworth appears more explicit and the VG is alongside the other entries.   Therefore to revert to the original query (a long time ago) is the Serial Number a reference to the soldier's Good Conduct Certificate issued to him on discharge and used as a character reference for future employment rather than the Good Conduct Badge issued by the Army and recorded as it attracted enhanced allowance?

I have seen examples in the records where the soldier has requested a replacement. It would not appear in the record as it was for the soldier to keep.

Now I have to go out in the rain - enjoy the sun!
