GoodersUK Posted 6 December , 2022 Share Posted 6 December , 2022 Hi, I have one picture of my great uncle of the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, who died in 1914. A friend is a professional photographer and has offered to do a coloured version. Attached are the original and the coloured version. I have two questions: Would the epaullettes have had white piping? Other pictures of home service dress that I've found seem to be all red. Are the buttons too 'gold'? Surviving jacket buttoms seem duller but that could just be age and repeated polishing? Thanks.

White piping of scarlet shoulder straps is correct for the home service full dress tunic until a new pattern was introduced in 1912, but that which few units had received by 1914. The 1912 version had all white shoulder straps with pointed ends (instead of rounded) and the inset ticket pocket was removed from the waist seam. The buttons are too pale and because gilding metal was an alloy of brass and zinc they should be a darker shade. The scarlet shoulder strap was from the tunic pattern before 1902 known as the jampot cuffs style. Edited 6 December , 2022 by FROGSMILE

I’m glad to help, it’s a cracking photo and apart from the buttons the colouration has been done very well. I’m sure that you will treasure it.
