Some really interesting observations here. Based on the evidence from the collection as a whole I would date the image to between 1906 and 1914 and probably India.

In terms of the shoulder flash it really is not clear cut, this is as good as I can manage. Unfortunately the collection only has this one image of this particular regiment.

It is a short and straight title which is commensurate with the HLI.  Officers in most regiments did not wear a shoulder title with woollen service dress, but usually did with cotton khaki drill.  That is what you see here.
