Unusual Annotation on War Badge Roll

Having just received a new batch of SWB Roll pages from a most helpful Forum Pal,one of the entries, not for one of my Badges, but for another Recipient, was surprising...

The war Badge entry of Gunner 70868 Arthur William Niven, made interesting reading.

Enlisting on 13th January 1913 & having served overseas,he was discharged on 4th March 1918,due to Sickness, aged 24,he had served Overseas.

Next to his number was an Asterisk* & @ the bottom of the page marked * was the following statement:"All service prior to 24-8#17 forfeited on conviction of desertion",Now thats a new one to me & I thought others might like to see it!He was discharged from :"R.A.Collecting Station Catterick" & granted Badge #:334906

Intriguing to say the least...

I have never seen a SWB roll to start with so that's interesting in itself.

Seeing your post I remembered that on the Medal Roll of my Grandfather

(Obtained also thanks to a GWF pal!) I saw something similar, perhaps this

was more common, I have no idea.....

It mentions that the name of a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps is misspelled

and this is corrected, but what caught my eye was this: “NO Medal” and under

Remarks: “Deserted 22-1-16.” Is this more common in your experience?

Michael

I would say generally, yes,Medal Roll pages quite often have anotations regarding Desertion & then denial of a Medal, this was the first War Badge Page I had seen with such a description, this man also has a Medal Index Card[according to the NA site],so I wonder if he received his Medals as well for his last few weeks service?
