This was the very first highland regiment raised by the British Army and to put that into perspective its origins predate the Battle of Culloden. All subsequent highland regiments were raised using the Black Watch as a basic template, from which, once created, modifications could be made to establish new and discrete identities of their own. The long pin on the back was designed for hats but it could also be used on a jacket lapel or even dress if inserted carefully. They were similar to so-called sweetheart brooches that were often gifted to ladies by their menfolk as a keepsake. max7474 Posted 21 November , 2022 Share Posted 21 November , 2022 I would suggest maybe not a sweetheart but a tie pin. Long pin was kept in place by a keeper. I wore a similiar one.

Perhaps we’d best not dance on the head of a pin.

Most were made in London, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where there were long established jewellery quarters that also sold such military trinkets.
