All I can say with confidence is that both photos show a man in the Royal Artillery (RFA) and so cannot he George Crowley given his consistent Rifle Brigade provenance. I personally can see from examining carefully their facial features that they are very likely the same man.

I cannot identify a link between 40 Battery in India and the lettered batteries within 148th Brigade in France, but it was common for men of the artillery to be posted between units.  Sorry I can’t help more.
