busterwood Posted 9 November , 2022 Share Posted 9 November , 2022 Can someone help please? Looking for information on uniform formation signs of 36th ulster division, especially The 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Colour and shape worn 1st day of The Somme & whether it was also painted on helmets Thank you in advance Geoff
Jervis Posted 9 November , 2022 Share Posted 9 November , 2022 The Link to the long long trail has an image of some of the patches worn by the battalion’s including 9th skins. I assume they wore the “red hand” patch. Jervis
busterwood Posted 9 November , 2022 Author Share Posted 9 November , 2022 Thanks for that, looking at it a little blurred I presume it’s black over yellow rectangle?
Jervis Posted 9 November , 2022 Share Posted 9 November , 2022 Yes. It is very blurred , but I thought 9th Inniskillings were in the top right “Red-Yellow”. Getting online access to the diary itself might be clearer.
jay dubaya Posted 9 November , 2022 Share Posted 9 November , 2022 Unsure of dates used, they wore a 2.5 x 1 inch horizontal yellow rectangle

jay dubaya Posted 10 November , 2022 Share Posted 10 November , 2022 Those shown above are dated - Original Division 1914 and those shown in the May 1917 36th Division diary may answer the original question? David Bilton’s ‘Badges of Kitcheners Army’ notes the yellow rectangle worn on both sleeves touching the shoulder strap. No info on painted insignia. poona guard Posted 10 November , 2022 Share Posted 10 November , 2022 The Somme Association image is correct and no helmet markings were worn. I have tried to trace the image the LONG LONG TRAIL is supposed to lead to but can't find it. Does anyone know the exact location?
jay dubaya Posted 10 November , 2022 Share Posted 10 November , 2022 It can be found in WO95/2491/4 - page 93 of first download
poona guard Posted 11 November , 2022 Share Posted 11 November , 2022 Thanks Jay, very interesting. Have had them marked as badges adopted for a special offensive but they are flags - clears it up nicely. Dave
