Sgt William James 'Stan' Stanford

Sgt William James 'Stan' Stanford of 1/7th Middlesex was my maternal Grandfather. His son (my uncle) and I have been trying to find out what he did to be awarded the MM (London Gazette 2 Nov 1917). Can anyone help?

All the records seem to suggest that this was a very quiet time for the regiment. They had seen action at the front but what I have read suggests they were well behind the front line Sept/Oct 1917 for a spell of rest.

I have been to PRO, looked for his war records, read the War Diaries and so on, but found nothing useful.

Can anyone help?

If the award was in the Gazette on 2nd November he could well have won it 3 or 4 months earlier. Possibly at the start on the Third Battle of Ypres or even earlier. The 1/7th Middlesex first went into action during 3rd Ypres on 16/8/17 as part of the 167th Bde, 56th Division.
