Guest pdbartram Posted 19 November , 2002 Share Posted 19 November , 2002 Sgt William James 'Stan' Stanford of 1/7th Middlesex was my maternal Grandfather. His son (my uncle) and I have been trying to find out what he did to be awarded the MM (London Gazette 2 Nov 1917). Can anyone help? All the records seem to suggest that this was a very quiet time for the regiment. They had seen action at the front but what I have read suggests they were well behind the front line Sept/Oct 1917 for a spell of rest. I have been to PRO, looked for his war records, read the War Diaries and so on, but found nothing useful. Can anyone help?

Alan Lines Posted 20 November , 2002 Share Posted 20 November , 2002 If the award was in the Gazette on 2nd November he could well have won it 3 or 4 months earlier. Possibly at the start on the Third Battle of Ypres or even earlier. The 1/7th Middlesex first went into action during 3rd Ypres on 16/8/17 as part of the 167th Bde, 56th Division.
