Skipman Posted 28 October , 2022 Share Posted 28 October , 2022 An MGC soldier am researching was awarded the Military Medal for 'bravery in the field' The award is listed in the London Gazette on the 18th of July 1917. How long did it normally take from gaining the award to its appearance in the London Gazette, and would that be a good indication of when the event for which he won the award took place? Skipman Posted 28 October , 2022 Author Share Posted 28 October , 2022 I did look but didn't find the right place but now have it. From LLT "Check back over the six months before the date of the listing in the London Gazette; longer if the listing was made in 1919." clk Posted 28 October , 2022 Share Posted 28 October , 2022 (edited) Hi Mike, I'm pretty much useless at researching MMs, but I know that there are at least a couple of Pals that are. If you were to post his name/details, they may be able to find the award schedule he appeared on, and tell you broadly when that related to. As an afterthought, Divisional HQ diaries often contain awards and decorations that appear in "Routine Orders". As I understand it, the award process of awarding a MM was often relatively quick after the event, so if you could find one, that may help to narrow down the time line Regards Chris Edited 28 October , 2022 by clk

Ivor Anderson Posted 29 October , 2022 Share Posted 29 October , 2022 (edited) You may as well have the image of his MM index card while it is still free from the National Archives - reference WO 372/23/170989 As Edward I states the 18 July 1917 covers April to early June 1917. His MM schedule no. of 90818 was actually covered by this gazette. His MM could be for one of the Battles of the Scarpe. Skipman Posted 29 October , 2022 Author Share Posted 29 October , 2022 Many thanks all. Much obliged. I've been through the 103 MG Coy diary and Brigade diary and will have a look at the 34th Division diary when get a minute. No specific mention so far, probably Scarpe/Chemical works area. Thanks again Mike
FlersChampagne Posted 29 October , 2022 Share Posted 29 October , 2022 This is for April 1917. Interestingly the 4 awards to the 103rd Coy MGC are gazetted in LG 18.7.17 but fall into the very large block gazetted in the 9.7.17 Gazette. All the known ones in this gazette are for April.
